While enalapril can be used under the instruction of a vet, it is known to cause issues in dogs suffering from certain medical conditions and can interact with various commonly used medicines.
Medical Conditions
Dogs with the following conditions might be unsuitable for treatment with enalapril (Enacard Tablets for Dogs):
Angioedema, bone marrow problems, hemodialysis, high potassium blood levels, increased risk of infection, kidney problems, liver problems, low blood pressure, low blood sodium levels, renal artery stenosis, swelling.
Substances
The following substances are known to interact with enalapril. It’s advised that you speak to your vet if your dog is taking or has recently taken any of the following:
Aliskiren, allopurinol, amiloride, azilsartan, candesartan, eprosartan, hydrochlorothiazide, irbesartan, leflunomide, lomitapide, mipomersen, olmesartan, potassium, sodium, spironolactone, telmisartan, teriflunomide, tizanidine, triamterene, valsartan.
Avoid administering diuretics in conjunction with enalapril, or just before starting treatment with the medicine.
I Just Gave Enalapril To An Unsuitable Dog!
If you have reason to believe you just gave enalapril to an unsuitable dog, you should call the vet for advice and watch over your pet closely for signs of a bad reaction. If you gave the medicine to a dog with normal or low blood pressure, or if a dog with regular/low blood pressure gained access to this medicine and ingested it you will need to call the vet immediately. Dogs with regular or low blood pressure are likely to develop hypotension as a result of enalapril, which can be a dangerous condition when left untreated.
